EducationGraduated from Pomona College in 2006 Cum Laude with a B.A. degree in English and minors in Linguistics and Media Studies. GPA of 3.81. Dean’s List every semester. Selected for Phi Beta Kappa membership. SAT Verbal: 800/800. Math: 640/800. AP English Language and Composition: 5/5. 11 Years Tutoring Experience.
ExperienceI’ve always loved learning and sharing the joy of discovery and the thrill of a challenge with others. I find that the more a student can relate his or her own passions and experiences to a subject, the more that subject’s material becomes a part of the student, rather than stale information to be memorized and forgotten. My goal, therefore, is to engage those I tutor, not merely to instruct.
For 3 years at Pomona College, I worked as a Writing Fellow, tutoring other students in all aspects of expository, persuasive, and creative writing, including grammar, usage, vocabulary, style, and structure. Writing Fellows are recommended by professors and are paid for their services. During my Senior year of college, I completed a teaching internship with a professor, assisting in teaching a core course for incoming freshmen.
Over the past 11 years, I’ve worked with elementary, middle, high school, and college students on their current classwork, with special focus on areas that present a personal challenge. I’ve prepared high school students for the SAT Critical Reading and Writing Skills sections and the ACT English, Reading, and Essay sections, as well as guided them as they composed their college application essays. I’ve aided kindergarteners and 1st graders with their literacy and reading comprehension. Beyond standard tutoring, I have designed curriculum for and privately taught supplementary and advanced English courses for 1st through 6th graders.
I teach English to speakers of other languages (TESOL), and I have worked with more advanced English language learners on their pronunciation and conversation.
I am passionate, enthusiastic, and patient, and I would love to work with you!
HobbiesI love books, grammar, language, communication, and hearing about any subject from anyone passionate about that subject. I learn as much from my students as they do from me, and though some teachers despise being questioned, I encourage my students to voice their questions and engage me in lively debate. Not only do they develop their reasoning and capacity to form coherent arguments without realizing it (I'm nefarious that way), but they immediately engage the subject with all their faculties, retaining the material for far longer through association and exploration.
