Experience

I started tutoring when I was in high school and continued my passion for teaching through college. I have always been a tutor driven by a desire to help my students understand the course material beyond the scope of the class and syllabus. One of my proudest moments as a tutor was helping Peter, a 10th grader struggling with his high school biology course. He struggled to find the motivation to study and work towards earning better grades, and he had difficulty comprehending the dense and copious information inherent to the sciences. We worked together during his sophomore year to improve his organizational skills, studying habits, and comprehension of the sciences. He went from D’s and C’s to earning 5’s on his AP Exams, and nearly perfect marks on his SAT subject tests. I’m excited to see him enroll at UCLA as a prospective biochemistry major. I've helped so many students like Peter achieve their academic goals year after year. I’m eager and excited to help teach more students to gain the skills to put them on a path to better grades and academic success! I have 10 years of tutoring experience in several scientific disciplines. My tutoring style is structured, but I do try to tailor my instruction methods to each student’s specific needs and personality. I integrate lesson plans to help visualize goals, I use spaced repetition methods to improve learning and memory, and I present information with a sense of purpose and passion which I’ve found helps with retention. Part of the reason why my students are successful is that I set them up to teach as they progress. A few of my students have gone on to becomes tutors, and have seen advancements in careers within academia. If students need me as a semester/year long tutor, I recommend setting up a free consultation so we can work together to set goals and understand what your teacher/professor expects from you during the academic period. I have earned a grade of “A” in several of the major science courses offered at UCLA, including cell and molecular biology, genetics, biochemistry, biostatistics, and physiology. I’ve made a commitment to keeping my science education current by taking advantage of courses offered through UCLA’s extension program, and reading the latest scientific journals. My current work in biomedical research with an emphasis on regenerative medicine has kept my mind sharp in concepts specific to biology and medicine. My experience within research has provided me with a unique perspective into the modern advancements in biochemistry that may be applicable in more upper division level courses that emphasize research methods.
