Princeton Grad, 2014 Experienced tutor, specializing in SATs and APs Good with kids! Most tutors teach to the test. I don't. I focus on long-term success, rather than short-term test scores. What do I mean by that? Well, I teach students how to reason. I show them that to succeed on tests and beyond, you need to know how to strategize. Consequently, in preparing my students for SATs and APs, I prioritize teaching methodologies and frameworks for answering questions/writing essays that are based on my experience researching in college. (Note: Princeton is the only Ivy League college that requires its undergrads to complete a year-long thesis). Whereas most tutors teach students on a question-by-question, subject matter-by-subject matter basis, I don't buy those approaches because I know they only amount to short-term fixes. Once these students go off to college where there are no more SATs and APs, they become helpless sheep without tutors to hold their hands and parents to pay nefarious amounts of money for tutors to do so. (Oh, and by the way, this unfortunately usually means parents have to pay even more money later on to help their kids, or worse, watch their kids struggle through college.) It's a vicious cycle that must be nipped in the bud. And this can only be done by instructing students in the "how to" rather than the "what to." I offer this service, as I have successfully done many times before. In contrast to tutors who have several years, or even decades, of tutoring under their belt but never gave a second thought to instructing their students in such strategizing, I am confident that I know the right ways to think about test questions and, more broadly, to handle academics. Last-but-not-least, I can say from the bottom of my heart that I've always found it an inspiration to help my younger friends realize their full potential.
